Flashing on commercial roofing systems are typically made of metal strips. This year, roofing manufacturer CertainTeed® introduced SmartFlash® ONE, a type of flashing in liquid form, to the commercial roofing market. In this blog, licensed roofing contractor Genesis Roofing shares an overview of this commercial roofing solution.
What Is SmartFlash ONE?
SmartFlash ONE is a durable seamless flashing, applied as a liquid during installation. Made of polyurethane bitumen, SmartFlash ONE replaces traditional flashing on flat roofs. A typical commercial roof installation would utilize metal strips, sealant and fasteners to seal parapets, areas around drains and where the roof meets a wall. Vent pipes and other similar penetrations typically require rubber boots and sealant. SmartFlash ONE replaces all of these without compromising performance and durability.
Installation Process
SmartFlash ONE features a simple installation process that, with slight variations, can be applied to all parts of the roof. Installers from a certified roofing company will be trained on the specifics. The following is a general overview of the SmartFlash ONE installation process:
-
Prepare Work Areas — Clean installation surfaces and sand smooth surfaces for better adhesion. Apply painter’s tape to mask off non-installation areas. Caulk areas around penetrations and roof drains.
-
Prepare Reinforcing Fleece — Pre-measure reinforcing fleece and cut according to the installation area.
-
Apply Primer — SmartFlash ONE can be installed without a primer, but it can also be applied to improve adhesion. Both primer and SmartFlash ONE come in pre-measured bags that are mixed prior to installation. Both need to be used within 30 minutes of mixing.
-
Apply SmartFlash ONE — After the primer is cured, position the fleece, mix the SmartFlash ONE components and apply using a brush or roller. The fleece needs to be fully soaked. Let cure for 15 to 20 minutes before removing the painter’s tape. SmartFlash ONE will finish curing after 48 hours.
Advantages
The main advantage of SmartFlash ONE is its versatility. Conventional flashing needs to be cut to fit specific areas, which can be time-consuming when working in tight spaces. Liquid flashing is less labor-intensive and requires fewer tools. Flashing installation can take less than a day on an average commercial roof. There’s also less risk of injury from working with sharp metal edges. SmartFlash One is quickly and easily repairable, which can be a great advantage during emergency roofing situations.
